Skill Level: Introductory
Remember those sturdy rugs, table runners, and place mats Grandma used to make form old clothes? Now you can make something from all that old, dated fabric that’s been stored in your sewing room for years, using a simple wooden frame with nails. You will be making a place mat this session in order to develop the skills needed to make something bigger, like a rug.
Materials: cotton fabric (nothing stretchy) 1 yard for warp, 4 yards for weaving, pinking shears or pinking blade on rotary cutter, Rotary cutter, Self-healing mat, ruler, fabric scissors with a sharp tip
*Any color of fabric can be used for the warp since it is not visible in the finished rug. You will not need the other tools in class except the sharp tipped scissors and your pre-cut fabric strips.
**You will need to pre-cut your strips before class: Cut the 1 yard of fabric for the warp into 1 ½ inch to 2 inch strips. Cut the 4 yards of fabric for the weaving into 1 ½ inch to 2 inch strips. Keep the width of the warp and the waving fabric the same. The wider the strip the heavier the place mat and the faster the weaving process goes. Using a pinking blade or pinking shears will help eliminate raveling.
